Why Investing in Girls Is the Greatest Gift You Can Give

As women, many of us reach a point where we begin thinking more intentionally about how we want to give back and where our time, talents and treasures can make a truly meaningful difference in the world. For the members of Camping4Girls, that purpose can be found in helping fourth-grade girls experience the confidence-building adventure, connection and personal growth that a week of summer camp can provide.
Through our nationwide network of dedicated members and supporters, Camping4Girls helps provide selected girls with a cost-free week at camp, along with encouragement, friendship and mentorship that extends far beyond the camp experience itself. Unlike many other women’s membership groups, Camping4Girls is unique because we get to work directly with 4th grade girls to provide positive mentorship, moral support and skills building that benefits them for life.
What makes membership especially meaningful is that our impact reaches to every generation. While the girls we support gain confidence, independence and a stronger sense of belonging, our members often discover deep friendships, shared purpose and a sense of joy from investing in the future of young girls in such a lasting way.
Why 4th Grade Matters
By the time girls reach fourth grade, most are beginning to develop a strong sense of identity and independence. They are learning how to navigate friendships, manage their emotions (and properly respond to those of others around them), build confidence and understand where and how they fit into the world. It is a season of life filled with both incredible growth and incredible opportunities.
Research on youth development has consistently shown that positive experiences during childhood help build resilience, self-esteem, leadership skills and social confidence. Summer camp provides a unique environment where many of those experiences happen naturally through outdoor adventures, new friendships, teamwork and supportive camp counselor relationships…sometimes, camp can be the first opportunity a girl has to navigate these situations without parental oversight.
However, there are also families across the U.S. who may not be able to send their daughters to summer camp. That’s where Camping4Girls members come in.
Through fundraising, mentorship, community partnerships and a special “sisterhood” among nationwide Camping4Girls chapters, our members help ensure that more girls can experience the life-changing benefits of camp, regardless of their personal circumstances.
The Gift of Camp Goes
Beyond One Week
What you know about summer camp may include swimming, campfires, crafts and outdoor adventures. Those are certainly part of summer camp magic, but the real gift of the experience goes much further.
We see firsthand that our young campers often return home with increased confidence, leadership skills, resilience, social skills, self-expression and a stronger sense of belonging.
We’ve had the pleasure of hearing about:
The shy girl who returns home more willing to speak up in class.
A hesitant camper who discovers she can take on challenges she never thought possible.
The girl who first struggled to find her place yet discovers she belongs right where she is.
The camp experience creates important opportunities for girls to grow by trying new things, solving problems themselves, building new friendships and gaining confidence in their own abilities.
Our members also get the distinct pleasure of knowing they helped to make that meaningful growth possible and that the benefits of these experiences will last a lifetime.
A Sisterhood That Extends Across Generations
One of the best aspects of the Camping4Girls membership is that we are much more than volunteers — we are a special community of women.
We are a multigenerational network of mothers, sisters, grandmothers, teachers, former campers and many other special women who share a belief in the power of camp and the importance of supporting future generations of girls who will become women.
We work together to raise funds, identify girls who would benefit from camp, shop with girls for their camp gear, provide transportation for campers and offer ongoing encouragement. Along the way, we also get to build lasting friendships with other members.
Some of our members originally joined because they simply wanted a way to support young girls. They stay — some for many decades — because they find deep connections, purpose and friendship through the experience.
Most importantly, our members value the chance to be part of a mission-driven sisterhood working toward a common goal: uplifting young girls at a formidable age.
Passing Forward the Gift of Camp
For many other members, supporting Camping4Girls is deeply personal — they attended camp themselves as girls and still remember the friendships, confidence, independence and joy they experienced from being at camp for a week or more during the summer. They know firsthand how transformative it can be. Being a Camping4Girls member is a way to pass that gift forward.
Other members didn’t attend camp, but they understand the value of positive female role models and supportive communities. They recognize that every young girl deserves opportunities to grow, discover her unique strengths and build confidence in all the ways she learns about herself at camp.
Regardless of whether members support our mission because of her own camp memories or because she believes in creating opportunities for today’s girls, the result is the same: a new generation of girls benefits.
